Ill conceived

Ill-conceived this love

Such passion, pain, turmoil, peace,

Give it a rest, please.

Music detour – Heartbeat Song & Lonely Tonight

Well for some reason I have been writing about love this week on Meanings and Musingswhat love is and letting love happen.

So I will go with the flow… and post this song. Enjoy!

You, where the hell did you come from?
You’re a different, different kind of fun
And I’m so used to feeling numb…

This is my heartbeat song and I’m gonna play it
Turned it on…

Until tonight I only dreamed about you
I can’t believe I ever breathed without you…

And then, while exploring music magazines, this song caught my eye.  Let me say I am not usually a Country fan but something about this …

So, here’s a not-so-recent song about…not love, rather vulnerability, loneliness and perhaps a little denial about what’s enough.  Again, enjoy!

We don’t have to be lonely tonight
(Need you, want you, I’m right here)
We don’t have to be lonely tonight
(I know we shouldn’t, but I don’t care)
I don’t wanna be right, I don’t wanna be strong
I just wanna hold you ’til the heartbreak’s gone
When the sun comes up, we can both move on
But we don’t have to be lonely tonight…

One more, one last time…

Have a fabulous weekend.  Turn it on and turn it up 😉

And the bully?

As I sit down to write about bullying and to be part of the collective voice of #1000Speak on ‘Buildin1000speak-blankg for Bullying’, I can’t help but ask, “what about the bully?

Let me say this first up – bullying is unacceptable. It is hurtful, it is harming… it has potential long term effects on those involved, including the bully. It can be traumatic.

What constitutes bullying?  It is as much the fear-inducing acts of harassment, violence, coercion, intimidation, as it is about the target’s perception of the acts themselves.  It is a two-way street – what is considered bullying by one, may be perceived by another as a mere ‘pain in the butt’ because bullying is about fear.  Our individual relationship with fear is different.

‘Bullying’ is a behaviour – when we use THE word, IT gives colour, tone, images of certain actions which cumulatively and subjectively become acts of bullying.  The word ‘bully’ also has a certain flavour – when used, IT goes from being a subjective description of a person doing certain acts to an absolute ‘objective’ definition of a person.  Isn’t it usually the case, when we refer to a person as a bully, we see an immovable, unchangeable ‘thing’ called a bully, whatever the essence of that ‘thing’ may be in our minds? When someone calls me a control-freak and often enough, I am looked upon, assessed and seen through the lens of ‘control’.

The theory of reflexivity suggests that we are constructed by our being in the world, that is we are changed by the expectations, norms, rules, technologies etc. of the world we live in, and we also construct the world by being in it.  Our presence – all that we say and do – contributes to change in our world.

So, as we label someone ‘a bully’, are we as part of his world contributing to a process  of solidifying the abhorrent behaviours he has exhibited? Are we somehow creating a certain acceptance that those are the behaviours we expect from her?  Are we giving the impression that that is all we can expect of him, that that is all she is capable of? What becomes of the bully?  When one is labelled a bully and often enough, what is one to become but the label?

I know there is no simplistic model for the bullying phenomenon – no ‘if i change this bit here, then all will be well’.  It is complex.  Though perhaps if we begin by refusing to label a person a bully though condemning the actions, our compassion is a step towards a direction of change, and hopefully a positive one.

What I have said so far by no means undermine the person experiencing bullying.  This is a look at the other side of the equation, and to show some compassion for the actor who has learnt to express his or her anger, hurt, fear, unworthiness etc. through harming others. To show compassion is not to condone, but seeking to understand and to love.

We can learn the art of fierce compassion – redefining strength, deconstructing isolation and renewing a sense of community, practicing letting go of rigid us-vs.-them thinking – while cultivating power and clarity in response to difficult situations.                       Sharon Salzberg

As an aside, I cannot resist this video of a 4-year old’s response when she was told she looked ugly.  That’s a ‘high-five’ from me! 🙂

This haiku came to me almost immediately as I look at the two word prompts (mhmm…I wonder why); and as I write this post, this song kept nudging at me.  So here is the music video of an amazing singer with an incredible voice, who has lived what seems to be a rather tumultous life, with her 2001 award-winning song ‘Shine’.

Wow, what a lot of adjectives 🙂  Enjoy!

Angels in your life

I often wonder how I got here… an island girl from South-East Asia.  And I don’t always see what has brought me here.  And I commonly forget to count my blessings, to appreciate the gifts and grace that were my companions through it all.

Yes, I can pat myself on the back, and congratulate myself for my courage, my strength, my tenacity, my fine instincts, my foresight, my intelligent sensible mind, etc. but I’d like to believe I have angels in my life.

Let me clarify what I mean by ‘angels’.

My felt-sense of angel is this: it is unconditional acceptance, unwavering attention, attending beauty, a space in which I can fly and know I will land within its safe reach.  It is safety, comfort and love!

I have many angels throughout my life, one of which is books, the other music.  They have been my refuge, they have been that place which I seek my solace.  They have lifted me, enlightened me, given me great joy!

There have been people who, in their own ways and sometimes unbeknown to even them (and I at the time), supported me, compelled me to realize who I truly am.

What or who are your angels?  Where do you go, my lovely, when you need comfort and love?

So here I share a piece of music that has touched me in many ways, its meaning changing at times.

May you find comfort in the arms of your angel!

Visions – a poem

female in repose

Visions

Watching you watching me
Your gaze bold
Igniting the ardent flame
Scorches my soul

Flicker of light
Your eyes unwavering
  Seduction of the night
My will unresisting

Touch lingers skin on skin
Familiar terrain now foreign
Yearning swells within
Desire reigns

Lips in sensual motion
Devours possesses
Like alchemic potion
Demands acquiescence

My hands yours
Across valleys and peaks
Depths to explore
Quickening heartbeats

Feeling every caress
Kisses which ease
Every word coaxes
To be free, release

At last accede
To unimagined passion
Heights of ecstasy
Indescribable sensations

My heart dances once more
To rhythm of desires
As it seeks to soar
Across immutable spaces.

Leave a light on for me

I excavated this 80s song from the deep dark recesses of my music player.

belinda carlisle Remember her? Pop superstar and former lead vocalist of the all-female band the Go-Gos.

You or someone in your circle would have been, at one point, interested in the…umm song. No? OK, I’m the ‘daggy’ one 🙂  Nevertheless, here is the pop ‘oldie’ from 1989 – Belinda Carlisle’s ‘Leave a light on for Me’.  Enjoy!

Darling leave a light on for me
I’ll be there before you close the door
To give you all the love that you need
Darling leave a light on for me
’cause when the world takes me away
You are still the air that I breathe

Just like a spark lights up the dark
Baby that’s your heart
